The word “rewarding,” in this podcast, means doing something that is fulfilling or that creates a feeling of happiness or importance in oneself: “As a teacher, it is rewarding to see students graduate and be successful in their lives.” A “reward” is a something given to someone because of an achievement, a service they’ve performed, or an effort they’ve made: “Our boss gave each of us a cash bonus as a reward for good work.” A “reward” is also something given to people who help to find a criminal or to return lost or stolen items “Our neighbor is offering a reward for the return of their lost cat.” in need In this podcast, “in need” refers to those who people lack in things or care to survive, such as money or clothing: “Our organization helps former factory workers who have lost their jobs and are in need.” The word “needy” has a similar meaning and refers to people who don’t have the basic things people need to survive or who are very poor: “For Thanksgiving, we’re provided meals for needy families.” Finally, “if need be” means if necessary or if required: “I’d prefer not to drive two hours to the Dallas office, but if need be, I’ll come on Thursday.” Or, “I think we have enough food for the party, but if need be, I’ll go to store to get more food.” 3 these materials on another website or distributing them in any way is prohibited. Some people say that it's civic duty to "give back" to your community. That's true, but for me, I want to do some volunteer work so that I can feel useful. I've been working at the same job for years and it's not at all rewarding. Yes, I make good money, but I never feel like I'm doing any good in the world.
When I was in college, I had dreams of changing the world. I wanted to work in a non- profit organization that did relief work, that helped women and children in need, or that had an impact on public policy. I've begun to think again about those dreams and thought I might take the first step of doing some volunteering. Then, I can see if I like that kind of work and make some hard decisions.
