In this podcast, the phrase “a bit of a hike” means a moderately long distance covered by walking, or further than one would normally or comfortably walk: “The meeting is a bit of a hike, but if we hurry we should be able to get there on time.” A “hike” is a long walk in a natural area: “Last weekend, we went on a beautiful hike to Multnomah Falls.” The phrase “take a hike” is an informal and rude way to tell someone to leave: “We don’t want you here.
