In this podcast, the word “ceiling” means the maximum limit, or the highest or biggest something can be: “The city government has a spending ceiling of $385,000 for improvements to city parks.” Normally a “ceiling” is the top, inside part of a room: “Are you going to paint the bathroom ceiling, too, or just the walls?” The phrase “glass ceiling” refers to the way that many women and racial minorities can’t get jobs in management, even though they work very hard and have good educations, but instead just have to look up at the white males who lead most organizations: “Why didn’t Lucille get the job?
